KKN-PPM UGM (Student Community Services) students conduct a waste management program in Babulu Darat and Babulu Laut that consists of a series of activities including socialization and direct training or practice. In total, 12 neighborhood units (RT) and 400 students are involved in these programs, resulting in a master plan and processed products.

Babulu, Penajam Paser Utara – In 2023, the KKN-PPM (Student Community Service Program) from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) implemented a comprehensive waste management program in Babulu Darat and Babulu Laut. This initiative included a variety of activities, such as socialization and direct training, aimed not only at addressing waste issues but also at promoting environmental sustainability in line with ISO 14001.

Several key programs were conducted by KKN-PPM UGM students in Babulu. The waste management program equips the community with the skills needed to transform waste into useful and marketable products, potentially boosting the local economy. One notable method involved the use of maggots to decompose organic waste, helping reduce waste volume while producing protein-rich byproducts useful for animal feed. Additionally, the students taught the community to process cow bio urine into liquid organic fertilizer, providing a sustainable alternative for enhancing soil fertility in local agriculture. Another significant program focused on the production of natural pesticides from goat urine, which reduces dependency on chemical pesticides and supports a healthier ecosystem. Furthermore, the community was instructed on how to creatively repurpose used cooking oil into candles and process dry leaves into briquettes.

Collaborating with the Penajam Paser Utara Environmental Department, KKN-PPM UGM students organize community clean-up activities. These efforts not only maintain environmental cleanliness but also build a sense of responsibility and community spirit. Collectively, these activities contribute to the development of a comprehensive waste management master plan and the creation of various processed products.

KKN-PPM UGM successfully engaged 12 neighborhood units (RT), including 28 PKK Dasawisma groups and 400 students. This wide-ranging engagement ensures that the program reaches a substantial portion of the community, encouraging a collective effort towards sustainable waste management. Through these comprehensive efforts, Babulu is on its way to becoming a cleaner, more sustainable community that sets an example for other regions.
